See, I always saw the Grail Quest narrative as a satire of Christianity (Knight: gets murdered brutally by a loved one. Nacien: Well, you see, he had it coming to him because he enjoyed sex). I mean, it’s weird that they’re portrayed positively, isn’t it? Holy men in non-ecclesiastical medieval lit usually tended to be portrayed as lecherous and dissolute, such as in Bocaccio and Chaucer.

That’s an interesting view! Also, the idea that someone is punished because they enjoyed sex is not that out of the world, not as ironic as it might seem nowadays.

And I feel like Bocaccio and Chaucer are so populare because they are the exception.

There’s a few instances where I’ve seen people say that Bedivere openly practiced witchcraft and almost got burnt at stake for it if not for Arthur testifying for him, but there doesn’t seem to be any source material for it. By any chance, do you know where this comes from?

Ahhh I am so late in answering, I am sorry! I do remember this rumor going around, but I think it’s false. Some years ago people on the fandom, here on tumblr, really looked into it and the conclusion was that…. no text had Bedivere practicing witchcraft.

Let me know (people of tumblr!) if I misremember this
