Sir Gawain: Witch of the Wirral

New 4-page risograph comic in Bright Red on nice 170gsm Munken Lynx Rough paper. It also folds out on the reverse as a poster (a large drawing of Gawain leaving Camelot).

Now available to purchase here!

This is the first in my series of short comics chronicling the further adventures of Sir Gawain, brave Knight of the Round Table. The brilliant, anonymous medieval poet behind the epic Middle English poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight described Gawain’s journey north to meet the fearsome Green Knight in a cursory few dozen lines. We briefly learn that our hero faced many perils along his way, including bears, giants, wild men of the woods, and all kinds of trials of nature. I’m filling in that part of the story with a series of standalone comics, in print and online, following Gawain’s many adventures as he crosses an ancient, mythic, and strange Britain full of monsters and magic.

sympathetic morgana & mordred (queer coded?)

lucrezianoin:

as discussed with @luvlydoll ! I compiled this list without the non arthurian episodes with arthurian characters, also because the majority of them has liché villains (Morgana usually). Ahh I hope there aren’t too many mistakes, also it felt oddly personal and subjective, so many people will probably have different interpretations of cliché villain or sympathetic.

1949 THE ADVENTURES OF SIR GALAHAD
Sympathetic not villain Morgana. Villain cliché Mordred. Slightly queer coded?

1953 THE KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE
Not a completely sympathetic Morgana or a sympathetic Mordred for everyone, but in my opinion they are. They are definitely not cliché villains like in other adaptations. They plot against Arthur, but because they think Arthur stole their throne (they are husband and wife, here).

1962 SWORD OF LANCELOT
Evil!Mordred. Not cliché evil, but not sympathetic either. Also quite elegant, even if I wouldn’t call him queer coded.

1967 CAMELOT
Probably queer coded Mordred. A bit cliché evil.

1974 LANCELOT DU LAC
Evil Mordred.

1979 THE LEGEND OF KING ARTHUR
Evil Morgana and Mordred, not in an exaggerated cliche-y way.

1981 EXCALIBUR
Evil Morgana and evil Mordred (not too cliche-y).

1985 MERLIN AND THE SWORD
Cliché Morgana and cliché Mordred. Both evil.

1988 NEW ADVENTURES OF A YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR’S COURT
I have watched this movie without understanding a word as it’s in Russian. But from what I got, Morgana (in particular) and Mordred are very sympathetic. And Morgana go from apparent villain to Arthur’s ally.

1989 A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING’S ARTHUR COURT
Evil cliché Morgana and Mordred.

1991 THE LEGEND OF PRINCE VALIANT
Villain Mordred, but not a cliché. Slightly sympathetic?

1994 GUINEVERE
Morgana is evil and fights against Guinevere, but she isn’t too cliché.

1995 A YOUNG CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR’S COURT
Evil cliché Morgana (but amazingly fun).

1998 A KNIGHT IN CAMELOT
Not technically a sympathetic Morgana, but the main character played by Whoopi Goldberg is named Vivian Morgan (at the end we find out she is named Morgan). As there is no other Morgana, I think she might be safely considered the Morgana in this adaptation. And she is definitely on the good side.

1998 MERLIN
Villain cliché Morgana and Mordred (queer coded?).

1999 EXCALIBUR KID
Honorable mention! Here there’s Morgause in the role of Arthur’s close sister and villain. A bit of a cliché villain, but her reasons are quite clear and she isn’t completely evil.

1999 ARTHUR’S QUEST
Cliché villain Morgana.

2000 MERLIN THE RETURN
Cliché villain Mordred and Morgana.

2001 MISTS OF AVALON
Not villain Morgana, who is also sympathetic. Villain Mordred, slightly sympathetic. But this is a book adaptation of the characters.

2005 STARGATE SG-1 SEASONS 9-10
Sympathetic not villain Morgana.

2005 KAAMELOTT
Sympathetic not villain Morgana.

2008 MERLIN (BBC)
Sympathetic not villain Morgana to totally cliché villain Morgana. Sympathetic not completely villain Mordred.

2008 version of CAMELOT musical
As before, villain cliché Mordred, queer coded.

2009 MERLIN AND THE BOOK OF BEASTS
Cliché evil Mordred.

2020 MERLIN AND ARTHUR THE LION KING
Villain Morgana, but not that cliche-y. Sympathetic non-villain Mordred.

2010 THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE
Villain cliché Morgana.

2010 AVALON HIGH
Evil cliché Mordred

2011 CAMELOT (STARZ)
Villain, but not cliché, Morgana. Slightly sympathetic.

2014 DRAGONS OF CAMELOT
Evil cliché Morgana

2014 THE LIBRARIANS
Not too villain Morgana, too mysterious to know.

Since I saw the post about trans!Mordred you reblogged earlier, I thought I’d share a headcanon I’ve had for a while, which is:

Basically everything about Gareth’s story actually makes more sense if you headcanon him as trans.

I mean, think about this: Gareth shows up at Camelot. But he doesn’t introduce himself as who he is. Instead, he refuses to tell anyone his real name, and just asks to stay at Camelot and be given food and drink for a year. Then, when the year is up, his second request is that he be given the chance to go on Lynette’s quest and prove himself. And only then does he reveal his real identity.

And, throughout this story, we’re given no indication that Gareth’s brothers ever recognized him.

It’s a hard story to understand. I always headcanoned that Gareth wanted to keep his identity hidden so that he could prove himself on his own merits, not just be seen as Arthur’s Nephew or Gawain’s Little Brother or whatever. And I do think that’s absolutely part of it, regardless of what other headcanons you add to it.

But if you headcanon Gareth as trans, a whole lot else falls into place.

Why don’t Gareth’s brothers recognize him the minute he shows up? Because they’re expecting to see a sister, not a brother. Mallory explains that they didn’t recognize him because it had been a few years since they’d seen him, but would that really be enough on its own? Maybe. But if you factor in the few years plus the fact that they’re seeing someone of the opposite gender than they’d expect, it makes a lot more sense. (I still definitely headcanon they’d figure it out well before the year was up, but it makes the lack of immediate recognition much more plausible.)

And he doesn’t immediately introduce himself as Lot and Morgause’s son Gareth because he’d be immediately told that no such person exists. So he asks to stay a year, keeping his identity hidden, because he wants to give the knights the opportunity to get to know him as a man, without the prejudice he knows would be there if he immediately revealed himself for who he is. It’s only once the other knights have accepted him as one of them, both through getting to know him and through him proving himself on his quest, that he feels comfortable telling the truth.

You could even factor Kay nicknaming him Beaumains into that, IMO. Maybe it’s a reference to the fact that he’s unusually pretty for a guy, or his hands specifically don’t look like a typical man’s. Who knows?

I just think it all fits together pretty well, when you think about it.

I was watching a documentary about King Arthur. According to the mythos there is a line on his grave that stays “…here he shall lay until he may return to us and bring goodness back unto the land”. So what I’m saying is…

Why hasn’t there been a story of resurrected, very confused King Arthur tamping around the modern world trying to save everyone? “Do you prefer that I do battle against that monstrosity?” It’s a smart car and no, they’re good for the environment. “Alas! That must be the machinations of a foul wizard!!” No, homeboy, it’s just a cell phone. I’ll get you one, easier to find you when you wander off aga– “An imp seeks to rule this, this, America. Should someone not slay that orange-faced mongrel?” No, you–Well, yes, actually, you can kill Trump

The crash is loud, particularly for 6am. Loud noises should be banned before 9am, Mo thinks. 8:30am at a push. Bleary-eyed, she pulls back the duvet and stumbles into the next room.

“What are you doing?” she asks.

From where he’s standing, baseball bat in hand above a pile of what looks like it may have once been an alarm clock but is now mostly a mess, King Arthur blinks at her. “I am vanquishing the beast,” he says.

“That’s an alarm clock,” says Mo.

“I know not what that be,” Arthur replies, and prods the heap gingerly with the end of the baseball bat. “All I know is that it did shriek at me at an ungodly hour, foul thing, and I did see fit to ruin it. I thought mayhap it were a banshee of some kind.”

Mo holds the bridge of her nose between her thumb and forefinger, and exhales very deeply. “Well,” she says, “I’m going to put the coffee on, if you want any. Unless you want to beat that machine into a pulp, too?”

“I approve of the coffee wizard,” says Arthur. “That noble thing may remain.”

“Great,” says Mo.

——

It’s only when Arthur has ‘vanquished’ the toilet flush, Mo’s mobile phone, her laptop, the television, and – bizarrely – her mother’s best shoes that Mo realises that there may, in fact, be a problem.

——

“So what you are saying,” says Arthur, looking rather ill at ease in his borrowed Big Bang Theory sweater and peering at the screen, “is that I may not vanquish this terrible beast, either.”

Mo sighs, and changes the channel. Procuring a new TV set had been a right pain, but luckily her pay is pretty good. For some reason, not many people had been willing to babysit the recently resurrected King of legend.

“No, Arthur,” she states mildly. “That’s Iggy Azalea.”

——

Mo drops the bags of Tesco shopping and drags Arthur away from the child.

Arthur protests loudly. “I would not have vanquished the beast which did plague him without first asking – ”

“He wasn’t being plagued by any beast,” says Mo, teeth gritted. “He was wearing Heelies. Now pick up the shopping.”

——

Arthur peers at the television, eyes narrowed, and Mo tries her best to ignore him. She has a rather large expenses claim to fill out to the council, after all.

“I must ask something of you,” says Arthur, quietly. “I have questions about the beasts which roam this land.”

Mo sets down her notepad and pen, and prepares herself emotionally. “Go ahead.”

Arthur shifts in his chair. “I wonder – when did it happen that goodness was brought here?” he asks. “The prophecy foretold that I would return when goodness was needed, and yet I am faced at every turn by an image of what appears to be evil, but is goodness in disguise. I cannot vanquish it, for it needs not vanquishing. Why am I here?”

Mo looks down at her expenses claim. At the top, the words All expenses will be paid in full, provided that the claimant is able to keep the subject from inflicting further damages on goods which are not their own. Otherwise, these costs will be deducted from their expense claim.

Sighing, she changes the channel. Arthur recoils. “Vile!” he cries, and attempts to shield his eyes from the screen. “Luminous orange; what manner of beast is this? What gives him cause to spew such bile? Such filth that pours from his maw! Be he some form of serpent in the almost passable guise of a man?”

“That’s Donald Trump,” Mo says flatly.

Arthur looks excited. “I shall vanquish him!” he states. “I shall not rest until his blood – ”

“Maybe you could start with a rousing speech,” Mo suggests, thinking of her expenses.

——

Mo’s expenses are paid in full that month, minus the cost of a pair of Heelies.

Arthur’s TV publicist, on the other hand, is not quite as lucky.

I did read a book, or maybe a series of books? That sort of had that premise. Can’t for the life of me remember the title or the author.

That might have been Peter David’s Knight-Life! (the book, I mean)

By the way, amazing fic haha, that would be a wonderful story.

You guys, if there is ANY way you can go to
Tecklenburg and see ARTUS – Excalibur, DO IT. There are still tickets available
for 15 shows till 28 August 2016. I saw it last Friday and it was amazing. So so
good. Basically the first thing I did after I got home was trying to figure out
when I could see it again. I will watch it three more times now.
Superb performance by all involved and just a fantastic experience all around.
