Camelon: Camelot or Camlann?

arthuriantravels:

OS Grid: NS867810

Entrance Fee: No

How to get there:

by public transport:
Camelon has a railway station. It’s easy to reach from both Edinburgh and Glasgow.

by car: Camelon is located between M876 and M9. A803 runs straight through it. It’s also easy to reach on A9 travelling south from Stirling.

What there is to see:

Camelon is a suburb of Falkirk, which in turn is a city of about 35 000 between Edinbugh and Glasgow. It used to be important for canal travel, but now the Falkirk Wheel takes care of that.

So, basically, it’s just a town.

Claim of Authenticity:

Camelon is located on the northern side of the Antonine Wall and was founded in 143 AD by the Romans as a forward defence. However, it was abandoned after some decades.

Some people claim that Camelon could be Camelot, due simply to the similarity of the names, but for some reason there seem to be more voices in favour of Camelon being Camlann, also due to the name only.

There used to be building known by the name of Furnus Arthuri (Arthur’s Oven) close by at the shore of the River Carron, which passes north of Camelon. Geoffrey Ashe describes it as “a dome-shaped structure about 12 feet high, with steps leading up to an arched doorway and a window at the top”. The building was suppsed to be Roman, too, but is long gone and there is nothing to see of it now.

What else there is to see:

Glasgow, Edingburgh and Stirling are about half an hour’s drive away. Falkirk is a five-minute drive away, and they have interesting sights like The Kelpies, The Falkirk Wheels and remains of the Antonine Wall.
