King Arthur + Horses
EXCALIBUR (1981)
★★★★★
Directed by John Boorman
Screenplay by Rospo Pallenberg and John Boorman
Based on the book “Le Morte d’Arthur” by Sir Thomas MaloryI absolutely love this movie. In my opinion, it’s the best film ever
made about King Arthur. I never get tired of watching it, and I have
seen it hundreds of times in the last thirty-five years. It does have
flaws. And, I know that five stars seems like too much for any film that
is just short of perfection. But, as I said, I love this movie.I
first saw this film in theaters on the opening weekend when it first
came out, and it deeply influenced me from that point on. It rekindled
my interest in Arthurian mythos in ways that no other movie has ever
matched. Also, it has an awesome soundtrack. The Carmina Burana provides
that sense of power that the film needed, especially when Arthur is
rejuvenated by the Holy Grail.I love the dialogue throughout the film.
Sir Lancelot: “It is the old wound, my king. It has never healed. Guenevere… is she queen again?”
I could go on and on…
The film also has an all-star cast featuring Liam Neeson (“Gawain”),
Nigel Terry (“King Arthur”), Hellen Mirren (“Morgana”), Nicholas Clay
(“Lancelot”), Nicol Williamson (“Merlin”), Gabriel Byrne (“Uther
Pendragon”), and a young and dashing Patrick Stewart as “Leondegrance.”
Also, that is Robert Addie as “Mordred” in the picture included with
this post.

I can relate to Yvain on a personal level because when I realize I’ve wronged someone, I, too, throw myself into a fit of madness, rip off all of my clothes, and live nude in the forest for several years.
