Oh right! How could I forget Once Upon a time!
Thank you!!
Are Nimue and the Lady Of the Lake the same person?
Yes and no! There are different ladies of the lake!
For example in Malory Nimue is one of the ladies of the lake while the other one has no name (she is just called Lady of the Lake) and first gives Arthur Excalibur then she is killed by Balin for a vendetta.
in the Vulgata instead Vivian/Ninian is also one of the ladies of the lake!
Are there any books or tales where the Robin Hood ‘mythos’ is thrown into the mix?
In “The Once and Future King” there’s Robin Hood in the first book! I don’t remember seeing Robin Hood legends in any other arthurian novels.
About other media, in the old Robin Hood tv show there was an arthurian episode called “Return to Camelot” (s04e09). There’s also Robin Hood in King Arthur’s Disaster cartoon!
Whoho! 1989′s Connecticut Yankee is on youtube too! This is the one with the little girl who teaches karate and dancing to Guinevere!
Merlin and the Sword is on youtube!! Prepare for kind and cute Nimue&Merlin love story, Ragnelle and Gawain in a weird revisitation, Arthur losing Guinevere’s love to Lancelot, redhaireverywhere!Morgana.
I love this movie.

Seriously, if you were going to introduce Arthurian legends to someone who doesn’t know much about it via a movie, which would you even show them? I’d like to give my husband some reference point, but I can’t think of anything that captures enough of the Morte d’Arthur cycle except the 1980s Excalibur movie, which I just find so ham-fisted and heavy-handed and can’t stand. I don’t even know where to start.
Via movie, even tv show? I think the Merlin 1998 miniserie and the Mists of Avalon miniserie might be the best. They are both enjoyable and they try to illustrate in general what happened from pre-Arthur to the death of Arthur, in two different ways. Then the musical movie Camelot (1967) is a must, in my opinion, because it’s a beautiful musical and differently from the two previous miniseries it has a well characterized Guinevere and a beautiful Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot love story/triangle. Merlin and the Sword is also quite fun!
There’s also The Legend of King Arthur, a tv show of ten episodes which is on youtube, and it’s AMAZING. AMAZING. But the quality is very low, unfortunately.
(and of course The Sword in the Stone is always fun! And Kaamelott, which I think need some background but I couldn’t not name it)
I would keep the best movie (Monty Python and the Holy Grail) for last as it’s both amazing and needing some background on legends, in my opinion.

“I was once prophesied to repair a broken kingdom. My mistake was thinking that kingdom was Camelot. But now I think I understand. The kingdom I have to repair is here. The Underworld.”
Kay: You secret’s safe with me. Mostly because I don’t care and will probably forget.
