If you’re still doing the character thing, what about Ector? I think he’s a bit underrated

never heard of | so bad I’ll pretend to not know them | boring | indifferent | great!| a favorite | the reason why I started reading arthuriana | ONLY GOOD DAD IN ALL ARTHURIANA

kingmedraut:

if anyone could recommend me some of their favourite arthurian books (either retellings or non-fiction works), i’d be be super grateful!! if there are some i should avoid, i’d be grateful to be told about that too tbh

My very favourite novels are:

  • The Winter Prince (Elizabeth Wein) – historical, Mordred as main character
  • Exiled from Camelot (Cherith Baldry) – Malory-ian fantasy, Kay as main character
  • Idylls of the Queen (Phyllis Ann Karr) – Murder mystery, Kay and Mordred as main characters
  • Corbenic (Catherine Fisher) – Modern au, reincarnated Percival searching for the Grail
  • Guinevere trilogy by Persia Woolley – Guinevere as main character, magical/medieval
  • I am Morgan le Fay (Nancy Springer) – pre-Arthur as king, Morgana as main character
  • The Pendragon (Catherine Christian) – Bedivere as main character, historical
  • Gawain (Persia Woolley) – Gawain and Ragnelle (mostly Ragnelle) as protagonists, fantasy
  • The Squire’s Tales series (Gerald Morris) (especially the third book!) – series of books about different arthurian characters, mostly parody
  • The Road to Avalon (Joan Wolf) – Arthur, Morgana, Guinevere and Lancelot as main characters
  • Here Lies Arthur (Philip Reeve) – Nimue and Percival as main characters, historical, Arthur is not a good guy
  • The Once and Future King (White) (I doubt this needs an introduction)

About non fiction:

  • Cei and the Arthurian Legend (Gowans)
  • Arthurian Name Dictionary (Bruce C.)
  • Oxford Guide to Arthurian legend (Lupack) – In general, Lupack’s stuff is great!

and all the “Arthur of the” books, especially:

  • Arthur of the Welsh (Bromwich)
  • Arthur of the French
  • Arthur of the North
