The Legend of King Arthur Episode 3

In this episode we see the first cracks in Arthur’s kingdom. Bors starts to lose faith in Arthur’s dream, weary of the tournaments, while Gareth seems to combative and Gawain too obsessed in his faith. Later, while riding outside, Bors encounter Agravain and Mordred, with their aunt Morgan. Bors seems to remember Morgan, but her magic was too strong, and he comes to the conclusion that he has never met her before. He escorts them to Camelot, where Arthur is overjoied to meet her and welcome her as his new advisor. Mordred and Agravaine swear fealty to Arthur, while Morgan, now sitting at Arthur’s right, watches satisfied.

Guinevere starts to realise that Lancelot is avoiding her and she is saddened that he might have found better things to do than serve  her and keep her company. Lancelot assures her that he won’t break his promise.

Later, during a dinner, King Pelles arrives at court to ask help because of an usurper to his throne has taken his lands, and his daughter Elaine has been bewitched and imprisoned.  Pelles asks specifically for Lancelot’s help, as he is the purest of heart. Lancelot kills the usurper, and later he saves Elaine. She falls in love with him, but Lancelot refuses to marry her. It is clear that he wishes he could be a simpler Lancelot, without a past, that he could live a simple life, but he cannot break his vows to Guinevere. When Morgan appears in Elaine’s room to give her a potion that can get her Lancelot, Elaine agrees. Elaine gives Lancelot the chalice with the poisoned wine. Immediately, Elaine’s figure changes in that of Guinevere and Lancelot is tricked into sleeping with Elaine.

The next morning, Lancelot runs away, looking for a place to confess what he did. He walks into a small church where Morgan, in disguise, hears his confession of how Lancelot slept with Elaine only because he was sure she was the king’s wife. Morgan tells him that his penance should be to always be on the queen’s side, and always remember his guilt and never speak a word of it.

This is one of my favourite scene in this whole show. Merlin has just decided that it’s time for him to sleep, in Avalon, because the kingdom is safe, when Morgan walks up to the lake to show to her old teacher that she stole the magical scabbard, taunting him while she throws it in the lake. And for the first time, Merlin realizes that Morgan is not who he thought she was.

The Legend of King Arthur Episode 1

Uther decides he is in love with Igrain and reprimands Gorlois for keeping his wife for himself. Igraine and Gorlois, terrified, try to protest, but Uther is unmovable. The war starts and Igraine and Morgana are closed in their castle, waiting and hoping Gorlois will defeat Uther.
Morgana prays to the storm, but her magic is so strong that she calls Merlin to her, but not strong enough to stop the course of events. Uther kills Gorlois and arrive to the castle where he makes Igraine marry him. Morgana meets Merlin again and asks him to teach her magic, promising she will use the powers only for good. Some time passes, Merlin and Morgana are studying together, and Igraine is pregnant with Arthur. At the day of the baby’s birth, Morgana angrily confronts Uther, afraid he is the one who made her mother sick (the pregnancy) and when he chokes on his food, she conveniently lets him die.
Without Uther, Igraine realises no one is safe, so she escapes to Morgause (married to Lot), while Merlin takes baby Arthur away and sends Morgana to a nunnery. Angry because Merlin chose Arthur instead of her, and glad to have played a part in her father’s killer’s death, Morgana picks up the baby and promises him she will kill him too.

Years later, Arthur is a young man and we see him training with his adoptive brother Kay, alongside their father’s Ector. Ector asks Arthur to be Kay’s squire, for a soon to be tournament. They travel to the nearby city, and, of course, Kay realises he forgot his sword. Once arrived to the church, Arthur immediately sees the sword in the stone and picks it up to offer it to Kay. Shocked, Ector and Kay kneel and Ector tells Arthur that he is not their one true king. At the coronation, some of the kings refuse to follow Arthur and they declare him war. Later, Merlin, now at Arthur’s side as his advisor alongside Ector and Kay, tells the king that there is a sword in Avalon for him: Excalibur. They arrive at Avalon where a mysterious lady shows Arthur that there is a sword coming out of the waters, for Arthur to take.
