kingmedraut:

if anyone could recommend me some of their favourite arthurian books (either retellings or non-fiction works), i’d be be super grateful!! if there are some i should avoid, i’d be grateful to be told about that too tbh

My very favourite novels are:

  • The Winter Prince (Elizabeth Wein) – historical, Mordred as main character
  • Exiled from Camelot (Cherith Baldry) – Malory-ian fantasy, Kay as main character
  • Idylls of the Queen (Phyllis Ann Karr) – Murder mystery, Kay and Mordred as main characters
  • Corbenic (Catherine Fisher) – Modern au, reincarnated Percival searching for the Grail
  • Guinevere trilogy by Persia Woolley – Guinevere as main character, magical/medieval
  • I am Morgan le Fay (Nancy Springer) – pre-Arthur as king, Morgana as main character
  • The Pendragon (Catherine Christian) – Bedivere as main character, historical
  • Gawain (Persia Woolley) – Gawain and Ragnelle (mostly Ragnelle) as protagonists, fantasy
  • The Squire’s Tales series (Gerald Morris) (especially the third book!) – series of books about different arthurian characters, mostly parody
  • The Road to Avalon (Joan Wolf) – Arthur, Morgana, Guinevere and Lancelot as main characters
  • Here Lies Arthur (Philip Reeve) – Nimue and Percival as main characters, historical, Arthur is not a good guy
  • The Once and Future King (White) (I doubt this needs an introduction)

About non fiction:

  • Cei and the Arthurian Legend (Gowans)
  • Arthurian Name Dictionary (Bruce C.)
  • Oxford Guide to Arthurian legend (Lupack) – In general, Lupack’s stuff is great!

and all the “Arthur of the” books, especially:

  • Arthur of the Welsh (Bromwich)
  • Arthur of the French
  • Arthur of the North

Once and future king? Specifically the sword in the stone, but all the books if u have time!

fuckyeaharthuriana:

Ohh!! So I can do it for the whole series as a whole!

 The Once and Future King

I want to read it | never heard of | so bad I forgot the plot | boring | okay | I’ll probably re-read it | favorite | BEST

I have to admit that the first (Sword in the Stone) would probably fall more towards the “okay” part than favourite, as I much preferred the rest of the books!

I am honored!! @reyavie

If you’d like a list of my fav arthurian books ever and the arthurian books I’ve read, here it is (goodreads link, in order of preference):

CLICK TO READ THE LAST UPDATE (7 July)

+ (past updates)

Novels in a series are separated from the others and
numbered, placed in the chronological place of the year of publishing
of the first book of the serie. I’ve written down the title of the
series (and the year of the publishing of the first book) if the serie
has too many books or is much more well known by the title of an only
volume. In this case the series is segnalled by [1-n° of books].

Poetry has the [P] in front of the title; books composed by short stories have the [C] of collection before the title. [T] is for theatre. Stories that are about modern days,
Arthur’s return or reincarnations are marked by [AU] (even when a
collection of stories has only one modern story). The first [x] is the download link for free texts while [gr] is the page with recs on goodreads. [cl] is the rec on Camelot Library.

I’ve spent days and weeks (months, or, well, more than a year
actually) to write the list so, please, if you want to use it link it
from here (or with credits).

Please, feel free to add books (sending them to my ask or reblogging this post here) or point out any mistake I may have made.

letsreadwomen:

This is the fourth installment in a series of book recommendations, all of which will introduce you to kickass women from mythologies around the world, all of them written by women. All books listed had to pass the following criteria:

  • Be written by a woman
  • Be fictional
  • Have a woman as (one of) the protagonist(s)
  • Feature Celtic mythology
  • Be set in Ireland / Great Britain

Occasionally characters hailing from different countries overlap. In these cases I listed them under the mythology from which the most prominent female character springs.

UPDATE #1: I included the New Tales From The Mabinogion series, to be found in the Welsh section.

UPDATE #2: I added the Broom Closet Mysteries series under modern interpretations of Irish mythology.

UPDATE #3: I added Green (a leprechaun story) under Irish mythology.

UPDATE #4: Decided to add a few stories surrounding the legend of Robin Hood under Britannia.

UPDATE #5: Have added the Caledonia Fae series and the Caledonia book under Scotland.

UPDATE #6: Have added Tam Lin – a modern retelling – under Scottish mythology.

Anyway Arthurian content.

Recommendations?

I’ve read The Once and Future King, The Book of Mordred, and others of course but those are the ones standing out in my head…

Watching Merlin….

Seen several Arthurian movies… idk the one that’s set in Roman-ruled England where the budget wasn’t good enough for falling horses so no horses died and Guinevere was I think Kira Knightly?

Idk a lot of movies lol

Depends on what kind of books you are interested in 🙂

I have some recs tagged by character or topic (or ship) here:

BOOKS RECS

libraryleopard:

I need recs for Arthurian books that kind of have a Mari*n Z*mmer Br*dley vibe (think strong focus on the female characters, not super Christian) that AREN’T by MZB because I’ve sworn never to read any of her stuff. Help a girl out?

Good books about female arthurian characters that are mostly on the non Christian side:

  • Persia Wolley’s Guinevere trilogy
  • Newman’s Guinevere trilogy (a bit on the romance side, probably)
  • Nancy Springer’s I am Morgan le Fay
  • Miles’ Guinevere trilogy (a bit on the romance side, probably)
  • Higgins’ The Forgotten Sister

grohver:

Hey!! I wanted to do some reading on King Arthur so I was wondering if anyone had anything they reccomended! I know there’s not exactly a solid or official canon for the mythos but I’d love to read whatever stuff there is!!

There’s not really a canon canon, but if you want, here there is a list of old texts (free and online!) in chronological order. I added a note for the ones that, in my opinion, are the most important or fun reads:

Old arthuriana texts

When I started I mixed old texts (that can be tedious sometimes) with novels, so here’s a list of novels with a rating and characters tags in case you are interested in a particular character:

List of novels tagged (characters, theme, romantic pairing)

In general, people tend to rely a lot on Malory’s Morte d’Arthur as “canon”, because it is very popular and has a mix of everything (and much easier to find than the Lancelot Grail).

Have fun!
