could you recommend Arthur/Guinevere fanfics?

Unfortunately I don’t know many arthurian fics, but I can recommend books 🙂 they are basically longer published fanfictions.

  • Guinevere trilogy (Persia Woolley)
  • Arthur trilogy (Peter David)
  • Queen of Camelot (Nancy McKenzie)
  • Firelord (Parke Godwin)
  • A Connecticut fashionista in King Arthur’s court (Mancusi)
  • The Legend of Arturo King (Dunbar) – not the best of series, but basically an Arthur/Guinevere modern AU

Have you ever heard Heather Dale’s music that’s based around Arthurian Legend? If so, what’s your opinion?

Yes! It is actually one of the first arthurian music I have ever found 🙂 and I love it. I also admit I like Heather Dale in general and her other albums too.

I adored the musical she made with S. J. Tucker as well, both the new songs and the re-edition of old songs (Mordred lullaby was excellent).

My favourite song is Crashing Down.

Which would you say are the best Arthurina (movies/tv series) if I’m looking for Merlin characterization?

Hello! I am answering not privately so that people can add their recs, as I am not the best to rec good Merlin characterizations (I am not a big Merlin fan). Still, these are the ones I liked!

Movies with an interesting Merlin characterization (In bold the ones that I particularly enjoyed and that were nice movies):

  • Arthur and Merlin (2015) – Merlin is actually one of the two main characters.
  • Avalon High (2010) – Interesting teen Merlin in high school, side character
  • Merlin and the Book of Beasts (2009) – The usual wizard Merlin helps… Arthur’s daughter rise to power
  • Merlin and the War of Dragons (2009) – a weird (not good) movie, but the bit with Nimue and Vivian is very interesting, I loved it. Also, Merlin is the main character
  • The Excalibur Kid (1999) – this is one of my fav movies among the ridiculous low budget ones. Loved it, and Merlin is pretty funny.
  • Merlin and the Sword (1985): This movie has everything! And the Merlin – Nimue love story too.
  • Excalibur (1981): This is a classic of arthurian movies. Not one of mu favourite ones, but it is regarded as one of the best. Merlin is the best character of the movie, inmho.

Tv shows and miniseries with an interesting Merlin characterization (in bold my fav among these ones!):

  • Merlin (1998), this is one of the most popular miniseries and Merlin is the main character. I am not an enormous fan of it, but it is very well regarded.
  • Camelot (2011): this series has so many problems, but Morgana and Merlin alone make it worth it.
  • Merlin bbc: I don’t think this need an introduction!

Hello! Hi are you? I was wondering if you know where i can read The Forgotten Sister, since i’m really curious about, but i cannot find in my country :/ thank you!

I did! It is an excellent book! Definitely one of the best ones I’ve read in these past few years.

Where do you live, if I may ask?
Have you tried checking on abebooks? (even abebooks uk or com, it does sell in other countries, usually) or through bookfinder?

Do you have any expectations for Giles Kristian’s “Lancelot”? It will be released this 31 may, and Kristian is a succesful historical fiction author.

Ohh I didn’t know about this novel.

I admit I am not a big fan of Lancelot.I just read the plot on goodreads and there seems to be Nimue in it. I wonder if Morgause and the sons (and Mordred) will appear as well! I might not look the book up as soon as it comes out as my reading list is quite long, but I’ll look out for reviews (and to find out which characters are in the novel)!

But for all the Lancelot fans around: Lancelot by Giles Kristian

Who were the 12 kings/leaders who rebelled against arthur? I can’t seem to find a list

Hello! Unfortunately I couldn’t find a list of twelve, and I also remembered twelve, but in Malory there are eleven kings (or leaders) that are hostile and rebel against Arthur when he is crowned:

– King Brandegoris;
– the Duke of Cambenet;
– King Clariance of Northumberland;
– the King of the Hundred Knights;
– King Lot;
– King Uriens;
– King Idres of Cornwall;
– King Cradelmas;
– King Agwisance of Ireland;
– King Nentres;
– King Carados.

Basically Arthur’s sisters’ husbands (Lot, Uriens and Nentres) and less known people!

Do you have any film/TV show recommendations in particular for people just starting to get into the legend? I want to find more information about the story and characters because I think it’s quite interesting, but I have some difficulties with reading at the moment :)

Hello!! 🙂 and welcome!
Yes, I do have some recs, even if I have to say that arthurian TV is not always the best. Still, for someone that wants to start and pick up who’s who and the general story, these might be useful:
– The legend of King Arthur, a 10 episodes series that you might also be able to find on YouTube. It’s very Malory like, so it is truly a gem.
– Excalibur 1981. I’m not a superfan of this movie, but it might be useful to see how the grail theme is intruduced.
– Sword in the Stone (the cartoon), mostly because it’s a classic and not many other shows and movies focus on pre king Arthur.
– Mists of Avalon miniserie is another popular one and has a lot of the Lancelot Arthur Guinevere love triangle.
– Merlin and the Sword is a not very famous movie, a but cheesy but very fun. It has some interesting plot regarding Merlin and Nimue and about Gawain and Ragnelle.
– Camelot 1967 is the beautiful musical that made me love Lancelot for the first time.
– Any Connecticut Yankee movie. These are great, all different adaptation of Mark Twain’s novel where a modern guy ends up in Camelot. A Knight in Camelot is a good one!
– Kaamelott. This is the best arthurian show out there. The first two seasons are just comedic sketches, so you can even just start from the third season to have more plot (more in the Kaamelott tag of this blog!)
– Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the best arthurian movie out there, but I put it last because it’s a parody and best enjoyable I think after having watched some serious take on the legends!

what are your thoughts on the TV movie version of merlin starring sam neill?

Generally I enjoyed it a lot! I like that it is quite ambitious as it tries to depict all of Merlin’s life, basically incorporating all of Arthur’s life and reign as well, without looking too rushed. I enjoyed a LOT of elements, from the idea that gods need to be believed in to exist, to the misunderstanding with Galahad (truly, an original and satisfactory reinterpretation of Galahad’s role).

But while I liked the story, somehow I couldn’t get too attached to the characters. I didn’t like how there is only one ‘good’ female character (Nimue), who ends up being chastely closed into a nunnery because apparently being scarred ended her life. The other main female characters are Mab, Guinevere and Morgana (I wouldn’t consider Elaine, Merlin’s mother and the Lady of the Lake as main characters as they only appear briefly) and they are depicted as power hungry and/or sex hungry. A bit disappointing. And I admit I didn’t like the other male characters either, there was always something that stopped me (Arthur seems too arrogant, Mordred is plain villain, Merlin is a bit flat?), a part from Mab’s helper (I don’t remember his name), which started as a comedic character but ended up having a nice dramatic arc.

At the same time, the actors and actresses were great. It has a great quality for a tv miniserie.

Do you know of any books adapted from or inspired by Le Morte DArthur?

I fear that many (most) of the modern arthurian novels are inspired by Le Morte d’Arthur 🙂

If you are looking for something very close to Le Morte d’Arthur (like an adaptation or retelling) Steinbeck’s “The Acts of King Arthur and his noble knights”, Sutcliff’s “King Arthur trilogy” and “The Story of King Arthur and His Knights” by Pyle are excellent!

If you are looking for novels that maintain that magical Christianism you can find in Morte d’Arthur then Cherith Baldry’s “Exiled from Camelot” is also amazing, and so is Phyllis Ann Karr’s “Idylls of the Queen”. Both these novels are actually inspired by episodes that are not in Le Morte d’Arthur, but I think they are the best example of the feeling of magic mixed with chivalry and Christianism that you might find in Malory’s work.

do you know any good books about Lancelot?

I don’t read many books about Lancelot, so I am very picky about how his character is, but I have to say that these ones have, in my opinion, what a compelling angsty and interesting Lancelot:

  • The Once and Future King (White) – this is a classic and doesn’t really need an introduction. It is also the novel that made me look at Lancelot with kinder eyes.
  • Lancelot (Gwen Rowley) – for a book that looks like a romance, this (and the other Gwen Rowley’s arthurian books) is full of arthurian themes and little episodes. The story is actually quite original and it is mostly about Lancelot and Elaine.
  • A Connecticut fashionista in King Arthur’s Court (Mancusi) – I know the title sounds ridiculous, but the novel is actually fun.
  • Lancelot (Vansittart) – mostly, quite a poetic and different book
