The Fisher Queen

Here are just a few spreads from my new small book. It was inspired by a course in Arthurian Romance, and the portrayal of women in these stories (as mothers, as religious martyrs, as plot devices etc).

I was so pleased that people seemed to enjoy it at the Pittsburgh Zine Fair.

Bertilak: A comely kiss. Where I wondered did you win that? Within these walls?
Gawain: We agreed, Sir, to grant each other what we win. No word was said of telling where.
Bertilak: Gawain, big god! My guest and I must play again tomorrow! You might win more. Supper! Supper! Wife.

The way Bertilak looks at Gawain before slapping his shoulders reminds me of the picture in this post.

Lady: God give you a good day, Sir Gawain.
Gawain: Sweet Lady, may I send you the same?
Lady: This is not the knight Sir Gawain. He would know what’s custom in a Lady’s company, yet only yesterday I told you.
Gawain: Forgive me fair Lady, what is it I forget?
Lady: How it is courtesy to claim a kiss, Sir. Well, you see it would be welcome.
Gawain: I do not dare dear Lady, for fear you deny me.
Lady: Lord love you, Sir. What woman would be so churlish as to withstand your wooing? Besides, Sir, so willful a suitor, could he not well, constrain a Lady to a kiss?
Gawain: Constraint madam, is not a custom in my country. My courtesy however, is yours to command. Kiss, as and when you will.
Lady: Much amazes me, you speak so little of love. Is not the chief charter of old chivalry the language of love? Unless you know nothing, and your fame is false. Teach your poor Lady a little of your leaning in the text of love.
Gawain: Lovely Lady, who am I to teach or tutor you in such a subject? I have not the half, not the hundredth of your skill or scholarship in that. Yours to order madam. Mine only to obey.
Lady: Again, a kiss then I command of you, and that’s two kisses you’ve taken today.

Again, more tapestry foreshadowing! I can’t remember seeing one for the fox though.
